James Edwin Kee

James Edwin (Jed) Kee is a Professor Emeritus of Public Policy and Public Administration of the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration.  He joined George Washington University in 1985 as an Associate Professor of Public Administration after a 17 year career in government in the states of New York and Utah.  In New York, Kee served as a legal assistant in the Office of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and later became a legislative counsel to the New York State Assembly. In Utah, he held a series of cabinet positions including Budget Director and Executive Director of the Department of Administrative Services, the umbrella finance and management department of the state.

At GW, Kee was promoted to Professor in 1992; became chair of the Department of Public Administration in 1992-93; and was named Senior Associate Dean of the School of Business and Public Management in July 1993. He was responsible for the long range planning and budgeting for the school, faculty development, and curriculum planning.  In July 1997, Kee was named the Interim Dean and served in that position for a year. From 1997 to 2003, Kee was the Giant Food Inc. Professor of Public/Private Management.

Professor Kee’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of leadership, cross-sector collaborations, contracting-out and public financial management. He has authored or co-authored more than 40 book chapters and journal articles for such journals at Public Administration Review, Public Budgeting and Finance and The Harvard Law Review. He co-authored Out of Balance with former Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson and Transforming Public and Nonprofit Organizations: Stewardship for Leading Change (2008) with Kathryn Newcomer. He is currently completing a book entitled Governing Cross-Sector Collaborations: Emerging Choices for Public Managers for publication in 2014.  Professor Kee has conducted a variety of training programs in finance, evaluation and public leadership throughout the world.

Professor Kee has extensive work with nonprofit organizations, serving as President of the Stuyvesant Town Tenants Association in NYC; Treasurer and President of Green Acres School (a K-8 progressive school in Maryland); Treasurer and President of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre and Academy; Director of Development and Board Member of Ballet West; co-founder of the Willam F. Christensen Foundation at the University of Utah and co-founder of the Christiansen Ballet Academy (which became the Ballet West Christensen Academy). He also is Secretary-Treasurer and a member of the Board of the Arizona Senior Academy.

Jed is married to Suzanne Erlon, Artistic Director Emerita of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre. They have one son, James J. Kee, an opera singer currently in Germany.
